Exercise #29 :

Community Gatherings

Several years ago I had two experiences where the community got together for support and inspiration. One was with a group of people in the east coast and the other was with a friend who was battling cancer and has now passed away. In both instances I was touched with how when given a chance to speak from a heart place, everyone took the opportunity and actually had something to say that everyone else needed to hear.

For this entire year I am sponsoring a Community Gathering at my painting studio. First Sunday of each month from 6:30 - 9:30. Everyone is invited. There is no agenda and no main person. We sit in a circle, pass a talking stick around (an object will do), one person speaks at a time while everyone else just listens. It is an old form of tribal democracy. Very moving, just listening to people sharing is worth everything it takes to get there. It all makes this world we live in a smaller place to feel connected with. And more than we imagine we need to know others and have them know us.

So try this, get some of your closest friends together, sit on the floor, get a talking stick (can be anything), and talk, and listen. It will move everyone into a deeper relationship to themselves and to each other.
