The Hearts and Bones Art Class

June 2, 1996 Exercise #6 :

T W O E Y E S

For years I have had two eyes...in the faces of the people that I paint. More than that, two different eyes on the same face. I didn't realize this for years. It wasn't until an old beautiful lady named Elmira saw a slide show lecture that I was doing in New London CT. She came up to me afterwards and was all excited. She wanted to know why there were always two different eyes in all my paintings? I hadn't really considered it but upon a closer look I did see two eyes. After much thought I realised there are at least two major ways of seeing. One eye see's "reality" (the stuff around us and in front of us - like these words on this screen). The other eye "see's" into the other worlds. They see dreams, memories, fantasies, and imaginations. Also I have seen that one eye see's a warm spectrum and the other eye see's a cool spectrum - interesting dualility to create a wholeness of sight.

The name of this lesson is "not seeing" or "two eyes." For 15 minutes a day, in a safe and relaxed place, blindfold yourself and draw in your sketchbook. Draw anything, just let it flow and you will see something different, something you never saw before. And at the end of the week, try a half - hour. Be in your creative space and be creative. Draw, sculpt, dance, play music, and see what there is TWO SEE. Sometimes it is not what you see but how you see it. Write in your journal about the experience. Enjoy!!
