The Hearts and Bones Art Class

March 27, 1996 Exercise #4 :

B U R N B A B Y B U R N

Many of us creative folks are a little attached to the things we create. This is not a bad thing, but not always always a good thing. This weeks exercise is focused on letting go, surrender, non-attachment, and transformation.

Create something new each day for 10-15 minutes, like a drawing. Then take it outside and burn it. Be careful, be smart, be wise, and enjoy. Watch how you feel as it burns. Does it seem to go somewhere? Do you feel a sense of joy, esctasy, thrill? That is not all that might come up. You may also experience terror about letting go of something you just created that you liked, and you might think that there might not be a lot of that creative stuff around in the first place. Not to worry, you'll see, something else will come along with the experience, something unexpected.

Then you can do something creative with the ashes. One of my students palced their ashes in a lake that the earthquakes made along time ago. I thought that was brillant, placing part of his creativity in the earth, in the unconscious, in the water that would feed the cities. I suspect that his creative spirit will bless him more than ever in his dreams. The more you let go the more you will receive. Take care!
